Description

The Margaret Henry Oral History Archive is a collection of audio tapes, transcripts, summaries and essays that were part of the Oral Histories Open Foundation Course (1986-1989). Margaret Henry was a history lecturer at the UON in the 1980s.

The oral history tapes have been digitised and made freely available to the wider global research community thanks to the generosity of The Vera Deacon Regional History Fund.

Interview by Dorothy Harrison in 1988 with David Bowtell about the Masonite Factory at Raymond Terrace. David was born in 1930 and attended Newcastle Tech. High, he recalls his early years in the suburb of Merewether, the pit paddocks near Hillcrest Hospital, the pit ponies, and
the 'coffee pot' which travelled from the Junction to Glenrock Lagoon. He also remembers the tram lines. David worked in the bank and in 1951 as a clerk with the masonite factory at Raymond Terrace, eventually becoming Assistant Purchasing Officer. David explains how masonite is produced, gives a history of the factory's management changes, employee conditions, his travels overseas and the talks about his own family history.

Availability of timber, water, coal and electricity were the main reasons Raymond Terrace was chosen as the site for the first Masonite factory in Australia. In 1937 the Masonite Corporation (Aust) Limited was formed and purchased land at Raymond Terrace on the corner of Williamtown Road and Pacific Highway.
