Description

The Margaret Henry Oral History Archive is a collection of audio tapes, transcripts, summaries and essays that were part of the Oral Histories Open Foundation Course (1986-1989). Margaret Henry was a history lecturer at the UON in the 1980s.

The oral history tapes have been digitised and made freely available to the wider global research community thanks to the generosity of The Vera Deacon Regional History Fund.

SummaryInterview by Jane Guy in 1988 with Bob Johnston about his memoirs of the Maitland Show. Bob recollects as far back as 1930 at the age of 5 going to the show with his parents. The event was very much orientated towards supporting local business, businesses such as Galston's who showcased their clothing and fashion, Meahan's exhibited furniture and other household goods, and Johnston's would promote "get your new shoes to wear to the show". He discusses the sideshows, sample bags and events and how these changed over the decades.

The Maitland Show is one of the oldest shows in Australia and has experienced the changes affecting its community and Australian society in general. From its beginning as an
agricultural gathering, it has prospered into an event recognised throughout Australia.
