UON Library, University of Newcastle, Australia:  Locomotive sheds, Hamilton, N.S.W. This photo appears to be taken on the same day as Locomotive sheds, Hamilton, NSW, 9 March 1903, with the same locomotives as that photo appearing along with two additional locomotives, Nos. 36 and 92. No. 36, in the foreground, is in the process of having coal loaded into the bunker behind the cabin, was built by Beyer Peacock & Co, Manchester, builders number 3292, as an E-10 class mineral tank engine with a 2-6-4 wheel arrangement. It entered service on the NSW Railways on 22-Aug-1891 and was the second engine to have the number 36, finishing its life as 2023. It was withdrawn in March 1932, condemned on 13-Sep-1939 and scrapped on 21-Dec-1939 after running 721,434 miles in its career. In the background, another locomotive, No. 92, has appeared at the entrance to the locomotive shed. This locomotive was also built by Beyer Peacock & Co, builders number 1637, as a suburban passenger tank engine of the CC-79 class. It started its career as No. 92 and finished as No. 1307; this particular locomotive is still in existence at the NSW Rail Transport Museum at Thirlmere, south of Sydney, being one of the last locomotives to be withdrawn from the steam locomotive fleet. It started work on the NSW Railways in September 1877, was withdrawn from service in June 1972, condemned on 21-Nov-1972, after running 1,375,161 miles in its career. According to A Century Plus of Locomotives 1855-1965 - E-10/20 class locomotives: Twelve tank engines intended for the Newcastle coal traffic were ordered from Beyer Peacock & Company and they were delivered in 1891. For interchangeability of parts, the design closely followed the builder's A-93 class except that the leading coupled axle position was moved 10 inches closer to the driving axle. They were given Belpaire boilers in 1906-07 and were displaced from coal and goods trains by more powerful locomotives. Total weight in service was 57 tons 8 cwt. According to A Century Plus of Locomotives 1855-1965 - CC79/13 class locomotives: Between 1896 and 1902, some 20 of the C-79 class [tender engines] became surplus and were adapted for further use by conversion to tank locomotives. .. They were then able to supplement the hard-pressed M-40, Q-158 and older classes in maintaining the growing suburban services of Sydney. "¦ Like the original C-79 class they clearly indicated their derivation from the well known 4-4-0T tank engines of 1863, once used on the Metropolitan and metropolitan District Railways of London.
