Lachlan Wetherall: This photo is of New Lambton C Pit (not A Pit). It is the same location as www.flickr.com/photos/uon/3270567955, with the same building in both photos. The New Lambton C Pit was located in Adamstown, near present day Clinton Ave.

The newspaper reports from September 1888 show that there were wo days when there was a large gathering of protesting miners at the New Lambton C Pit - Tuesday 18th Sept and Thursday 20 Sep 1888. So this photo is from on of those days.

Given that the disturbance at the pit on the Tuesday continued in a tense manner right up to dusk it is unlikely that this staged and orderly photo was taken on the Tuesday. It is more likely to have been taken on the afternoon of Thursday 20 Sep 1888 after the "ba-leg" (non-union) workers and the police and military had left the pit.
