amygibbs81: Just found out that the story - as told down the generations - is a bit of a furphy! In actual fact (according to news articles) Charles lost his arm, age 17, when it got caught in between two coal trains while he was uncoupling them. Still worked in and around the coal mines the rest of his life though, clearly as it would have been around 20 years before this photograph was taken.
