spazzalman: Looks pretty spooky... spison: This event was celebrating the connection of the electric light in Lambton. From the SMH, 10 Sep 1890 NEWCASTLE, TUESDAY. The celebration of the installation of the electric light took place at Lambton this afternoon. The whole town was en fete, and flags were flying in all directions. The proceedings were opened with the children of all the schools in the municipality being entertained at tea in Lambton Park. The Lambton Brass Band was present. The ceremony of christening the engines was performed by Miss Amy Palmer. The engine-house had been tastefully decorated with flags and banners, and was surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd. The leading people of the municipal township were present. After some speeches had been delivered by a few local residents, a movement was made towards an elevated spot known as Gravestown Hill, at which place amidst the plaudits of the assembled public, Mrs. W. T. Dent, wife of the Mayor of the township, started the machinery. A banquet in commemoration of the occasion was held in the Skating Rink, at which the Mayor, Mr W. T. Dent, presided.

Baldy McSpecs: Grovestown Hill. The engine-house was built in a quarry in the Pilkington Estate, between High Street and Young Street (Young Street in now known as Newcastle Road). It may be one of the buildings in this photo, but I don't know which. The new electric power poles are all painted white :)
