SCHOOL BEGAN IN HUNTER STREET TECHNICAL COLLEGE IN 1939 UNDER P. G. PRICE THE FIRST MASTER-IN-CHARGE. THE ENROLMENT CONSISTED OF ONLY FIRST-YEAR CLASSES. TECHNICAL SUBJECTS WERE TAUGHT AT WOOD STREET TECH. COLLEGE. WHEN THIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS TAKEN, T. J. CLYNE, THE FIRST HEADMASTER, WAS IN CHARGE. TYNDALL PHOTO. UON Library,University of Newcastle, Australia: Newcastle Technical High School was housed in Newcastle Technical College, Tighes Hill for some time. If anyone has more information about this, we would be very pleased if you contacted us or added a comment to this photo. fizza1941: This photo was taken early in 1941 just after the building in background was commissioned...note the embryonic grass lawn. The whole student body was collected en-masse and photographed from the a landing on a stairway of Edgeworth David Building . Yes, the facility was also the Tech. College and was shared with the School until about 1949 when the School was moved to Broadmeadow (nr the Racecourse). It later became Merewether High School. In 1952(?) the facility also housed the fledgling Newcastle University College an offshoot of the Sydney University of Technology later the University of NSW.
