Originally from Pokolbin opposite Happy Valley. Father was Tom Howard his father who he doesn’t remember. His mother was Locock and her father was Tom Locock. Amos Howard born in 1900.
Baden Howard was a nephew. Father was born at Camden. Mother born locally. Her father owned a lot of land around Pokolbin. There were 14 in his family, he was the youngest and the sole remaining member of the family.
Large families – The Kings of Pokolbin, Jock Allen of Mount View. Hector King.

Amos was 78 at the time of the interview. Young in looks and “going good”.
His father had a vineyard on Marrowbone Ridge 250 acres. He made wine at 4/- a gallon. Ivan Howard, his brother’s son still works it as a vineyard.
1919 the family came to live in Pokolbin. Next door to the old McGraine House. The four blocks were bought off Jim Gillard. Mrs Jones from West End (picture theatre owners - she was a Gillard).
His father bought two blocks (near his current home) to make up the six blocks.
Bernard McGraine was next door for some time. He and his son (Bernard) went to Sydney.
The original homestead next door was burned down after McGraine left. It was vacant at the time.

The Ward family – Billy Ward the piano tuner and his brother, Yorkie Ward had a refreshment room opposite Arthur Bridge’s grocery shop. Tom Punch took over. Her father used to bring the kids into Ward’s shop on a Friday night for a plate of fruit.
Amos’ wife, who talks often in the background, is from the Dibbs family – came to Cessnock in 1910 from England. Her mother’s father used to work at a colliery in England with a man called Kelsey. Kelsey came out to Australia and wrote to them about available work here. Her mother suggested he go out first and see if it would suit the family.
Her family travelled on The Norseman which left Tilbury docks, sighting land only at Cape Town and landed at Melbourne. Westcott and Williams.
Harold Potts and his wife. The Lions Club. Ettie Davis was in a family boarding house. She had a sister and they both went blind – she left the house to the hospital – she used take in hemstitching. Monty Parry he was a boarder and a builder. He built Amos’ house.

He went to school at Pokolbin. The post office was in front of the police station. There was a saddler whose name was Kenny. The School of Arts had always been there and may have been demolished and rebuilt. Her father used to play billiards there. Earl Sternbeck (then over 80). Slack’s Cordial Factory. The Amos’ planned to move to around Dural later in the year. The family live nearby.
Arthur Bridge (Bridge’s Hill), Litchfield (Harold), Fred Drayton from Nulkaba.
McDonald – (1828 the original grant owner Old John) Billy and George – Wills Hill Rothbury.
