John was born in Marrickville in 1923. His father started the business in 1937 at 357 Hunter Street, Newcastle. John joined the business in 1938 and he discusses the financial hardship put on the business during and after WWII. He witnessed many changes in the retail industry, particularly the opening of shopping centres and large department stores that put pressure on many local businesses in Newcastle.
Sobb's Furniture endured for forty-six years and made a significant contribution to business in the town, the family run business is part of the history of retail in Newcastle and fondly remembered by many. The store closed in 1984.
