SummaryInterview by George Allan in 1989 with Doreen Maher about Depression resilience and how the Great Depression affected Newcastle woman and their education.
Doreen was born in in Stockton in 1921 she describes the impact the Depression had on her family, there was much hardship after her father was injured in a car accident and out work for many years.
Much of her young years were spent at New Lambton and Swan Bay where Doreen attended Mulwee School.
Eventually the family moved back to Newcastle (Mayfield East) where Doreen's father purchased a cake shop named "Popular", later known as the "Oven Door" owned by Darby's opposite Woolworths.
The interview covers many social and economic issues associated with the Depression, and the impact this had on later years.
