SummaryInterview by Ronald Heathcote in 1989 with Edna Mavin about the early history of Awaba, Lake Macquarie.
Edna's father's parents (surname 'Field') moved to Awaba in 1894 and were involved in cutting timber for the railway that was being built. Edna went to Awaba Primary School in 1921 and left aged 14 to work at her aunt's dairy. She describes community life in Awaba, including the local church, sports and the social events at the community hall.
The decision of the NSW Government to build the Sydney to Newcastle railway provided need for a settlement in the Awaba area. Primitive dwellings were built and a few small businesses opened in these early years. Awaba was declared a village in 1894.
