Colin was born in 1917 at the family home "Ruperstone" in Stuart Street, Lorn. He attended Nillo Public School and later Maitland Primary School.
Colin's grandparents opened a shoe store in High Street Maitland in 1885 after their business in Tamworth had failed. The shoe store was managed by Sarah Johnston while her husband travelled throughout NSW as a representative for a shoe wholesaler, McMurtries. Successive family members continued the business.
Colin recalls the big flood of 1955 that inundated the Maitland area and the extensive damage done to local business' and homes.
