The NBN Television Archive
NBN Channel 3 began broadcasting from its studios in Mosbri Crescent, Newcastle on 4th March 1962.
For a long time NBN 3 was the only television station in the Newcastle/Hunter region. The people of this region were entertained and informed by programs and news on their own local television station. Many programs were made in the NBN studios and this “locally produced” content forms the basis of the NBN Television Archive.
Every night for over half a century, people living in Newcastle and the Hunter watched themselves, their neighbours and the “people, places and events” of the region though the lenses of NBNs cameras. NBN Television became an integral part of life for everyone in the region.
NBN News presented the big and small events of this region to the people who live here, recording their stories and documenting their history from March 1962 right up to last nights NBN News. Almost 60 years of material that will now be accessible to the entire community.
When completed the NBN Television Archive will contain all the local “news stories” that went to air on the NBN nightly news over that period, together with examples of many other local programs from the past 56 years. News, Sport, Documentaries, Variety, Motoring, Events, Telethons, Childrens programming, and much more that has been part of our day to day life for as long as most of us can remember.
The unique role NBN played, and continues to play, in this region is profoundly important. The visual history of Newcastle and the surrounding region that NBN Television recorded over such a long period is a resource of great historical significance. This includes the history and story of NBN Television itself and what went into the making of the material presented here.
This NBN TV Archive is an invaluable visual record of six decades of life in this region. The importance of such recorded history cannot be overstated.
