Photocopied flier promoting two candidates in a Student Representative Council (SRC) election. The SRC is an elected body that represents and advocates on behalf of the student body. The original SRC was inaugurated by an election in 1953, only two years after the Newcastle University College was first founded in 1951. 

Chris Craig was successful in his election bid and became the president of the SRC, leading campaigns and protests for fee free education during the 1980s. However, this was unsuccessful and fees were reintroduced by the federal government in 1989.

The reference to fighting amalgamation refers to the combining of the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Institute of Higher Education into a single institution, a merger that was hotly debated. The SRC ultimately lost this fight, and the two institutions joined in 1989.
