Minutes of the Annual General Meetings of the University of Newcastle Sports Union from 1989 to 2001.

Following the granting of autonomy on 1 January 1965, Newcastle University College became the University of Newcastle, and Newcastle University College Sports League became the University of Newcastle Sports Union.

The minutes are copies of the records of Sports Union General Meetings held from 1989 until 2001. The Sports Union was dissolved on 25 February 2002 with all its functions taken over by NUsport.

The governing body for the Sports Union was the Committee, which comprised the Executive, one Delegate from each Sports Union affiliated club (who had to be a student of the University) and the Immediate Past President of the Sports Union. The Executive consisted of the President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Sports Union, a Representative of the University Council and the Amenities Officer (non-voting). The President, Secretary and Treasurer were elected at the AGM. In 1974, the Sports Union Constitution was amended to add two student delegates to the Executive. The Vice-President and the two delegates were elected to the Executive by the Committee.

The Amenities Officer headed the Amenities Office which had oversight of housing for students as well as of sport and recreation. The Amenities Officer was a University appointee who reported to the Vice-Principal (Deputy Vice-Chancellor) and was the de facto Executive Officer of the Sports Union. The Amenities Office controlled the University’s sporting facilities both on and off campus.

In 1983, following the retirement of the Amenities Officer, the University split the Amenities Office into two separate Units – Sport & Recreation and Accommodation. A Sport & Recreation Officer was appointed to head the new Sport & Recreation Unit and oversee the operations of the Sports Union.

The Sports Union obtained its first personal computer, an Apple MacIntosh II, for use by Sports Union / Sport & Recreation Unit staff, in July 1988. From that time, Word Processing replaced typewriters for the production of documents, simplifying corrections and permitting the records to be saved electronically.

The Extraordinary General Meeting held in 1990 was to vote on proposed changes to the Sports Union constitution following the amalgamation of the University with the Hunter Institute of Higher Education and the Conservatorium of Music. The minutes for that meeting are missing.

The Extraordinary General Meeting held in 2001 was to vote on the dissolution of the Sports Union and transfer of assets to NUsport.
