Through a collaborative effort to safeguard Newcastle Maritime history, the University Library’s Special Collections and Archives is digitising a portion of the Newcastle Maritime Museum Society’s collection. Recently assessed as a collection of national significance, some of the collection’s photographic and documentary archives are being preserved digitally to ensure their longevity. This project not only protects these vital records but is also an opportunity for the University's Career Ready Placement students and volunteers to gain valuable GLAM sector skills, whilst promoting the collection, opening a window into Newcastle’s maritime past for communities and researchers worldwide.
While the physical collection is housed elsewhere, this digital online repository showcases key items from the collection that define the maritime identity of Newcastle and the Hunter Region.
We are deeply grateful to the organizations, volunteers, and community members whose dedication has kept this remarkable history together.
