Description Cardiovascular health has been an integral aspect of life for communities in the Hunter Valley for
generations. The Hunter has been a major industrial power in Australia. Which has brought the
community unique challenges to managing health. Health in the Hunter has been influenced by,
mining, heavy industry, agriculture, and the change in diet and lifestyle from the rapid growth of society.
This exhibition will explore how this story has evolved. From examples of food’s role in heart
health and early perceptions, to the function of the cardiovascular system and the link between
the lungs and heart, the impact of location and heart health, the boom of the medical industry
within the area leading to programs such as MONICA, a focus on research and community
engagement programs, and all other relevant research material. Exploring the University’s
extensive collection of archival material provided by the Special Collections team.
This exhibition aims to highlight both the challenges and achievements the Hunter valley faced
with heart health. This exhibition invites you to reflect on the important role of history to creating
a healthier future community here at the University.
