Stewarts and Lloyds (Australia) Pty Limited

Stewarts and Lloyds originally operated as an importer of British steel pipe before establishing a direct manufacturing factory in Newcastle. Site construction began at Mayfield in 1933, with pipe production formally commencing in December 1934.

During World War II, the factory switched to military production, making over three million shell forgings and aircraft engine components alongside seamless tubing.

In 1946, Stewarts and Lloyds joined with BHP and Tube Investments to create a new company called Tubemakers of Australia Limited. Over time, operations moved fully under the Tubemakers brand.

In 1996, BHP acquired full ownership of Tubemakers of Australia Limited. BHP later split off its steel and tube business in 2000 to form OneSteel, which eventually became Arrium and is now known as InfraBuild.
