If this was 1927, then it would have been a tour by the then Duke of York (future HM King George VI), rather than the then Prince of Wales, Prince Edward (future HM King Edward VIII) of 1920. (cite: Wikipedia article......). Or, of course, the other way round. My thinking that this was the Duke's trip is based: (1) usually the Prince of Wales' 3 feathers insignia is carried, rather than a Coat of Arms ("The Royal Trains", C Hamilton Ellis, 1971, ISBN 0 7100 8293 2 , Illustrations : p161 etc). Plus: (2) according to the cited article above, which carries a photo, it is likely there would have been a balcony clerestory ("observation car") in the rake (State Car no 4), most likely at the rear - assuming the same rake throughout trips! He had come by train from Perth, changing at Kalgoorlie, Port Augusta and Terowie. On Thurs.11.10.1934, this train ran from Terowie to Tarlee for an overnight stop. The photo is taken on double track, and so is the Fri.12.10 run into Adelaide. The loco is Pacific 609, not a 700-class Mikado. The leading vehicle is a V&SAR CE brakevan (clerestory), then the SAR commissioners car (Murray, not clerestory, preserved today at National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide); then come the clerestory Pullman cars Mt Lofty, Macedon & Adelaide (two sleepers and a dining car, in some order); almost certainly the rear carriage is a V&SAR sleeping car, for staff accommodation. The duke continued by ship to Victoria, where he spent 3 weeks, and a different royal train was assembled. This one was mainly for day journeys, but did spend at least one night at a quiet country station. Research is clearly indicating the 1934 tour, prior to the Duke's appointment as Governor General in later years, Very glad research of this order can be carrred out by Group members!
