UON Library,University of Newcastle, Australia: The following item was sent in courtesy of the Maitland Historical Society about the gas lamp in this photograph. The lamp originally hung outside of O 'Hearn's shop: The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River Advertiser of Saturday 28 May 1881 page 7 Title: Improvements to Mr. J. Hart's Premises. (last 19 lines) "The outside of the building has an equally satisfactory appearance; the front has been painted in a dark bright colour, and the colonnade has been thoroughly renovated and decorated. Over the shop window there is a large gaslamp of an ornate character. Altogether the improvements to the premises are very chaste, and have commanded a good deal of admiration. Mr. J. G. Chapman was the contractor for the decorations, the work as may be gathered from what has already been said, has been faithfully carried out. The improvements were carried out under the supervision of Mr. J. W. Pender, architect, and are in keeping with his usual good taste. Messrs. Harrison and Co's. premises have also been thoroughly renovated and improved, and present an attractive appearance."
