Framed Presentation by the Playing Members of the First Eleven of the Newcastle Cricket Club showing the tribute to H. Stokes Esq. and with thirteen named portraits - H. Stokes (Scorer), G. Bewick Jnr. (Hon. Secretary), J.R. Wood, H. Robinson, J.W. Wooden, G.W. Mitchell, H.M. Merewether, C.H. Hannell (Umpire), S. Sneesby, G.W. Webb, R. Bryant, C.W. Lawrence, J.R. Hall. May 1883.

InformationJ.R. (John Robert) Wood was one of the first Novocastrians to play cricket for New South Wales (soon after Dicky Bryant, who is also pictured). In 1886, when his father died, he inherited a fortune — his father was John Wood of Wood Castlemaine Brewers — and in 1888 he married Shakespearean actress Essie Jenyns ("the nation's darling") in perhaps the greatest celebrity wedding seen in Sydney to that time. For 20 years the couple lived at Jesmond House, on the Hill, until they moved to England in 1907. He died in Putney in 1928.

In 1885 the club presented framed versions of this image to C.H. Hannell and H.E.
