pellethepoet: Railway Street and the Carrington Hotel (now the White Cockatoo Hotel) is on the other side of the tracks opposite Petersham Station about 200m east behind the photographer. It was not only an unfortunate horse, but unfortunate cabman too (which explains the size of the crowd). THE SUBURBS. CABMAN AND HORSE DROWNED. BODY FOUND IN FLOOD WATERS. The Sydney Morning Herald, Monday 10 March 1913, p. 10 - The storm caused widespread damage throughout the suburbs. Gardens were ruined, trees uprooted, and houses unroofed. ... At 6 o'clock on Sunday morning John Stockley, a cab proprietor, was found drowned in flood waters seven or eight feet deep at the junction of Nelson-place and Trafalgar-street, Petersham. The body was found beside the cab and horse; the latter was also drowned. Senior-constable Ray and Constable Clarke donned their bathing costumes, and rescued Stockley's body. The deceased was a single man, 48 years of age, and he had resided in Unwin's Bridge-road. It was once Railway Terrace, as evidenced by earlier maps, but by the time of the drowning, it was already considered an extension of Trafalgar Street (see article).
