"Fast-Track Building Handed Over

The University’s new $4.3 million Science Building ‘fast-tracked’ because of the 1989 earthquake has been officially handed over by the project constructors, Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd.

The building was completed in eight months after the Federal Government advanced construction of the three-storey project because of damage caused to the university by the earthquake in December 1989.

The building, which includes six high technology science laboratories, was not due to be commissioned until next year. However, the building was urgently needed because biology and chemistry premises on the university campus had to be closed for the earthquake repairs.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Keith Morgan, said co-operation between the builder and the university had resulted in the building being ready for the start of the academic year in February.

“The building was constructed by Leighton Contractors and it is a tribute to everyone involved that students were able to attend their classes in the laboratories," said Professor Morgan.

“The speedy construction of the building was a result of a design and construction process that gave Leighton the leading role in being able to appoint architects and engineers. A quality assurance system resulted in an engineer being appointed to check every component of the building.”

The Associate Director of Leighton Contractors, Mr Bill Service, officially handed over the building to Professor Morgan. He said that Leighton s were privileged to have worked on a number during the past five years and that construction was currently progressing on another two buildings on campus in addition to earthquake repairs.

He said it was pleasing to have had such a long association with the University and that he had great pleasure in handing over the multi-million dollar Science Building."
