AUCHMUTY MEMORABILIA

"Professor James Auchmuty, the Foundation Vice-Chancellor, was always close to University sport.  When he died In 1981 he left a fascinating collection of sporting memorabilia.  The memorabilia are now preserved and exhibited in the foyer of the Auchmuty Sports Centre, where work has been completed on extensions valued at about $150,000. 

The Vice-Principal, Professor Ken Dutton, welcomed guests when Mrs. Auchmuty performed the official opening of the extensions on November 24.  He said that these days if was a rare pleasure to inaugurate new capital works at the University. 

 Among those at the opening were the University’s recently retired Amenities Officer, Mr. Harry Bradford, and his successor, Mr. Adrian Iakin, Sport and Recreation Officer. 

The President of the Sports Union, Professor Barry Boettcher said that the extension project was financed by the Sports Union and the Sporting Facilities Committee.   Gone were the days when the Federal Government provided universities with funds for new sporting facilities.  Professor Boettcher thanked Mrs. Auchmuty for having donated the personal sporting effects of Professor Auchmuty, a man, he said, members of the University held in tremendous esteem.

Mrs. Auchmuty said that her husband had always felt that sportsmanship as well as  scholarship was an important part of a University student's experience.

The extensions to the Auchmuty Sports Centre enlarge the weight-training room by about 50 per cent and also provide a spa, sauna, rest room, showers, toilets and an external terrace.  The work was done by Civil & Civic Pty. Ltd. on instructions from the University's Property Division."

Harry Bradford was the University's foundation Amenities Officer operating in that role effectively from May 1965 until his retirement in 1983.  The Amenities Office oversaw Sport & Recreation on campus as well as Student Housing.  The Amenities Office was split into Sport & Recreation and Accommodation following Harry's retirement in 1983.   See article on Harry Bradford in University News Vol 9, No. 13, August 4 to August 18, 1983, p10.
