Information provided by Adrian Iakin: "This photo was taken in 1984 on the Queensland University St Lucia campus and the athletes were members of the Uni of Newcastle Intervarsity Cross Country team.  This photo was taken just after the team finished the road relay event.  Athletes are L to R – David Firman, Craig Hansford, Terry Farrell, Albert Nymeyer and Brett Davis"

The 1984 Australian University Games (AUG) hosted by the University of Queensland, was the second trial AUG sanctioned by the Australian Universities Sports Association (AUSA).  The University of Newcastle participated with teams competing in Cross Country, Golf, Powerlifting, Squash and Volleyball.

BACK FROM UNIVERSITY GAMES

"The University’s teams achieved pleasing results in the XXXX Australian University Games held in Brisbane late in August.

The XXXX AUG was organised by the Australian Universities Sports Association, with the University of Queensland Sports Association serving as host.  This University took part in powerlifting, squash, volleyball, the cross country and golf competitions, the outcome being as follows:

The Cross Country:  Led by the powerful Terry Farrell, who came second, and athletes, Albert Nymeyer (10th), Craig Hansford (l2th} and David Firman (15th), the University team came second in the 12km Cross Country event, and in the 4 x 5000 metre relay was beaten by an excellent team from Flinders University.  Terry Farrell, showing his almost superhuman running qualifies, in the same week also won the Orienteering event at the University Games, as well as coming second in the New South Wales Orienteering Championships in Sydney. He has also been selected as reserve runner for the New South Wales State Cross Country Team, which will compete at the Australian Championships in Perth later this year.  Terry has reached such a high standard that he has some chance of being admitted to the Australian Institute of Sport."
