University News text:  "The First Grade Rugby Team's performance this season has been most impressive, the team being undefeated in the Newcastle district competition.   When The NEWS went to press, University had won the University [sic] Minor Premiership and was favourite to win the [Newcastle] competition.  Moreover, further enhancing its performance, University defeated University College, Dublin, on July 25 and drew with Queen's College, Belfast on August 28. The First XV has scored some memorable tries from scintillating play.  The side boasts eight Newcastle representative players, including Damien Brown and Nick Wright.   Brown, the former Sydney University and Randwick flyer, completed a tour of New Zealand with the New South Wales side.   Wright, from the Cowra district, was a member of -the Australian Universities team which toured the United Kingdom.  The last University first grade team to match the current team's performance was the team that played in the early 60's."
