InformationFlickr CommentUON Library,University of Newcastle, Australia: Looking closely at the texture of the puff-ball's outer surface gives an excellent reminder that fungal fruiting bodies of all sorts are woven from the fungal threads (ie hyphae) of the mycelium (ie network) that is the greater part of the organism. You might say that mushrooms and puff-balls etc etc are all examples of extraordinary fungal crochet. They are marvels of Nature, and just how these woven wonders are accomplished by seemingly simple, networked organisms still mystifies us.
