Baldy McSpecs: It is possible that this stands for Railways Operating Department, which was the UK's government train body. LC1073: The loco is a Midland railway "Kirtley" 0-6-0 built by Dubs of Glasgow in1871 and sent for use in France by the Railway Operating Division" (R.O.D.) during World War One in May 1917. The loco is known to have worked in the at Bergues (south of Dunkirk) in the winter of 1917/18 with the 6th Australian BG Op Co, where the photo may have been taken. The loco returned to England from France & to the Midland Railway in August 1919 and was scraped in July 1929. Source "R.O.D. The Railway Operating Division on the Western Front" by William A.T.
