Text:   Family links help team to win

"The last issue of the BULLETIN reported on University fourth grade team's victory in the district cricket premiership final on March 24 against Newcastle City.  However, space precluded an analysis of the exciting two-day match, played at Townson Oval.  University was sent in to bat on a wet wicket and lost three wickets for seven runs before Mr Peter Fryer and Mr Robert Faraday produced a dogged one-hour defence. Mr Faraday scored 27, his father, Graham, 16 and Mr Graham Mankelow 28. 

There was an appreciable crowd at the match as all other district games had been washed out and Mr Robert Pinkevitch brought the crowd to its feet with a six.  University ’s batting was concluded when it had made 141.  By tea on the second day Newcastle City had scored 71 for the loss of three wickets.  Although the wicket had dried out, accurate University bowling had put a brake on the run rate.  The bowling had been shared by Mr Phil Bellamy, Mr David O’Brien, Mr Jeremy Richardson and Mr Graham Faraday, who bowled 39 overs, including 18 maidens, from one end without a break.  Half-an-hour later Newcastle City was spinning because of the loss of three wickets - the three players were run out by Mr Allan Richardson.  They declined further and, with nine wickets gone, had scored 121.  However, City’s last batsman began to produce an array of shots, including a six onto the roof of the grandstand. City's score was getting very close to University ’s 141 with one over to go.  With three balls to go Mr Graham Faradey took a “classic catch” on the fence.  City was 137 and, if the ball had passed over the fence for six, they would have won the final.

At a team barbecue at the Faradays after the game, the team’s scorer, Mrs Margaret Fryer, was honoured for his (sic) contribution during the season."
