"Newcastle's Top Rugby Club

University's First Grade Ruby XV have gained the high distinction of being both Newcastle premiers and NSW Country Champions.

University had a 22 - 12 win over Mayfield East in the SGE Credit Union Newcastle rugby game - final at No. 2 Sportsground on September 14. This has the team its second consecutive Newcastle premiership.

Three weeks before, University scored a 24 -0 win over Port Kembla in the final of the Sterling Cup at Woy Woy.

The Sterling Cup is a competition for the top Country rugby sides. University Victory in the Newcastle competition last year entitled it to play in the competition. The Rugby Club's all round performance has been most meritorious, as shown by these achievements:

• First Grade Premiers 1984 and 1985.
• Club Champions in the Newcastle District First Division, 1985.
• Winners of the Sterling Cup, 1985.
• Four members of the First XV finished in the fist 10 places in the Anderson Medal, the district Best and Fairest Competition -Gareth Wanford, Ken Howard, Nick Wright and Ian Neale.
• Ian Neale won the award for most improved having represented Australian Universities and NSW Country this year.
• Tony Hogg was the leading try scorer in the district competition.
• The clubs also won the Kiatoa Shield, the award given to the club which gains the highest number of points in the Anderson Medal Competition."
