In 1989 I joined the Medical Communication Unit at the Royal Newcastle Hospital (RNH), a media production group jointly funded by the University of Newcastle Faculty of Medicine and the Hunter Health Commission. The Safety Officer at RNH at the time (Bob someone, they're always called Bob!) had a $4000-ish budget to make an introduction film for all workers (especially non-English speakers) to intro them to safety concepts. Ah, the hey-day of corporate video (pre-net, pre-interactive education, whack on a video and they will learn!). So we decided to use visual humour and keep it simple. Shot the whole thing around the old RNH wards, where I'd trained as a nurse just 3 years before! Used the latest pro-video gear, full kit production and crew ($4K was an OK budget back then!). We made it a culturally cringy Aussie-style humour and called the lead character a 'Dill'. That's Greg Dunford on the left (stage name Tim Bean) as the Dill. He had a green hair wig. He wrote and acted in the whole thing, and we used local pro and rep actors to fill other parts. Comedy as education. I was producer and director (oh, and editor). The video was a success to say the least, and was used for many years for all starting workers at Royal Newcastle Hospital. It also was fortunate to win a Bronze Highly Commended MOBIE Award in 1989 (a corporate video industry peak body at the time) and I went to Sydney to receive the award and make a speech (blah blah blah). We went on to make a sequel of sorts about back care for all hospital workers, called "Watch Your Back, Save Your Spine", using the same style but retiring the 'Dill' and dressing Greg Dunford (Tim Bean) up as a punk and calling him Johnny Wrongen! Didn't win any awards that one! This photo was taken for the front page of the Newcastle Post newspaper and was used to promote the video and what we did at the Medical Communication Unit. Greg Dunford got 'dummied up' as a busted up Dill, amnd I tried to look professional. Pfwah. The fact that I'm part of a historical collection makes me feel frickin' ancient!
