I grew as a schoolboy at No. 36 Kerr Street, Mayfield (1950-58). My home looked directly at this mansion house, which was then located on the corner of Kerr and Crebert Streets.

Today, I looked it up on 'Google Earth' and it is still where I remembered it. In my days it was the residence of Mr Glass, and his son Toby Glass. Mr Glass was a chemist, who conducted a Chemist Shop in Maitland Road, Mayfield.

In my time there was a two-stored block of flats on the right, facing Highfield and Kerr Streets, and the Mayfield Methodist Church. One of the tenants of these flats was Dr Newton, then a Newcastle brain surgeon, whose son would grow up to become Dr. John Newton, Surgeon, the skin surgeon, of the Lake Macquarie region. Since I moved away another set of flats was built to the left, facing Crebert Street. I do not know if Dr Newton and Captain Newton were related.

Before I left in 1958, to commence work in Sydney, the homestead building was subdivided into flats with Mr Glass being the main resident. The front of the building as shown, faced into Kerr Street.
If I put my mind to it I could say more of the old homestead!
