Lachlan Wetherall commented: The newspaper reports from September 1888 show that there were two days when there was a large gathering of protesting miners at the New Lambton C Pit https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/235703466 and https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/139051536 So this photo is from one of those days. On the Tuesday, the contingent of military artillerymen (in the white helmets) did not arrive at the pit until around 6pm when it would have been dark.
