By: Cat27th Jul 2024 9:05AMThe first meeting leading to the establishment of rugby league in Newcastle took place at this site on February 8, 1908, in the restaurant and refreshment rooms of James H. Pike. By mid-April, a group of rebel footballers had formed a Newcastle league team to join the first NSWRL premiership competition.

InformationImage shows the buildings and stores of Bolton Street, the Bank of New Zealand can be seen on the corner. Henry Buchanan, owned the Criterion Hotel on the right. The Centenial history of NSW, Volume 2, 1888 states that Henry was born in Glasgow in 1844 and immigrated to Australia in 1864. Henry was a coal miner for twenty years. In 1875 he built and operated the Albion Hotel at Wallsend. In 1877 he bought the Criterion Hotel. Last edited by: Anne Kay

russellr50: The date has to be before 1898 as the Courthouse was completed by 1892.
