Baldy McSpecs (PRO): This text from Trove, where an old resident is describing New Lambton in the 1880s: REMEMBERING New Lambton 60 years ago, Mr. Williams said a wooden road bridge ran across from about the site of the General Roberts Hotel to the new bowling greens. Underneath went a railway line, along which coaltrains chugged from the New Lambton pit ("a fairly big mine, right in the middle of Oxford-street).​

hedfram2: Records note that the first licensee of this hotel was Frederick Roberts who acquired the licence from 17 April 1903. From 17 April 1904 to 17 April 1906 the licensee was Philip J. Byrne.

Baldy McSpecs: The roadway here used to have a wooden bridge, under which the New Lambton Coal Company railway ran until about 1890. The line was pulled up and the bridge removed in about 1892. In this photo, on the right, you can see the railway cutting. It was gradually filled and is currently the site of the Tauranga Bowling Club greens/clubhouse.
