This photo appeared in the Campus Bulletin Number 4, June 27, 1988. The text was: "2NUR_FM ACCEPTS SITE FOR NEW STUDIOS. The Board of Directors of 2NUR-FM has accepted a site for new studios for the radio station. According to the Station Manager, Mr Brett Gleeson, the University has offered a block of land prominently located at the front of the University. 'In accepting this offer, the Board, and indeed the University, recognises the inadequate facilities in which the station is now housed', Mr Gleeson said during his address to representatives of the Hunter Region media at a luncheon in the Great Hall on June 3. The Chair of the board, Professor Cyril Renwick, recently commented that 2NUR-FM had to leave the Mathematics Building as soon as possible as space was needed by departments. Mr Gleeson said: 'As you can appreciate, an organisation with normal growth over 10 years would be bursting at the seams, Well, 2NUR is no different, except that it is not a commercial operation with a guarantee of funding. 'Therefore, to build new studios within the next 18 months 2NUR will need an unprecedented level of support , from the local community and the business and corporate sectors.' He told the media representatives that it would be a long, but eventually rewarding, road to see the new studios completed, but he felt confident that, with their support, the people of the Hunter Region would undoubtedly reap the benefits well into the 21st century. Mr Gleeson mentioned how public broadcasting and been an exciting experiment in 1974, but now some 84 public radio stations were licensed nationwide. Another 150 groups, including public television organisations, were aspiring for licences. 'All the stations vary in organisation and programme format, but what they have in common is a determination to provide opportunities for people to express their views and discuss issues in a new way,' he said. 'Public Broadcasting is independent from government. The stations generate from the communities they serve over $7 million a year. It is the range of sources of finance which ensures the independence and diversity of public broadcasting. 'But, at the same time, this means that none of them are ever flush with surplus funds. And, thankfully we don't have to pay for our locally produced programmes, which are presented by our volunteers.' Currently, 2NUR had 90 people who presented regular programmes, with a similar number of people either assisting with programme research or performing other duties around the station. '2NUR, or any other public radio station,' Mr Gleeson said, 'would not exist without the tremendous effort, talent and dedication of the volunteers. And, in my short time here at 2NUR I have been impressed by the quality of the volunteers.'
