russellr50: This was a big excursion - from Trove: COOK'S HILL PUBLIC SCHOOL PICNIC. Great Gathering at Toronto. The annual picnic in connection with the Cook's Hill Public School took place at Toronto yesterday, and was a decided success. The attendance was the largest that has attended this popular excursion for years past, necessitating the employment of two special trains, or 25 carriages altogether. The school children alone numbered 900. They fell into line at Laman-street at about 9 a.m., and were marched by way of Corlette, Bull, Union, and Hunter streets to the Honeysuckle Point railway station, headed by the Fire Brigade Band. Mr. H. Buckland, the headmaster of the school, was in charge of the boys, assisted by Mr. T. Cragg and others. The girls were under the supervision of Miss Sullivan, and the infants were looked after by Miss Herlihy. In addition to the school children, there was a very large attendance of parents and others who wished to partake of the enjoyment of the day's outing. All things considered there could not have been less than 2000 excursionists. The convenience of the passengers was well attended to by Guard M'Lean at Toronto and by Mr. Beal at Honeysuckle Point. The excursionists reached the pleasure grounds at about 11 o'clock, and the school children (who were specially catered for) were at once supplied with buns to put them in form for the day's fun. Dinner was provided on the green at 12.30, and at 2.30 the programme of sports was gone through for prizes, consisting of books, toys, &c., some of which were donated by the business people. All the teachers worked hard towards the children's enjoyment, and in this they were ably assisted by a committee comprising Mesdames Lyne, Wallace, Chidgey, M'Lennan, Roberts, and Williams, and Messrs. Hills, Willis, Lyne, M'Lennan, Hestelow, Williams, Clack, and Eldridge. The trains left for Newcastle at 4.45 and 6 o'clock, and the excursionists were landed back at Honeysuckle Point at about 6 and 7 p.m. respectively, all being well pleased with the day's outing ....
