AddBy: Peter Toedter28th May 2020 11:25AMThe photo shows the geology staff standing outside the RHS of the W. E. Clegg Building of the Tighes Hill campus in 1964. They are from left to right:
Dr. Slade St.John-Warne – General geology and basin studies.
Dr. Arthur Ritchie – Mining geology and geochemistry.
Prof. Beryl Nashar – Head of Department, introduction to geology (to make sure that we were being taught the correct geology) and petrology.
Brian Engles – Fossils and sedimentary geology.
Dr. Claus Diesel –Graduate of the University of Berlin. Coal geology and sedimentary geology. He became a world recognised authority on coal petrology and coal depositional systems.
Dr. John Rattigan – Exploration geology, oil geology, structural geology and geochemistry. He left the uni. in 1966? to work for Geophoto Resources Consultants (Texas Instruments). I worked for him 1968-1972.
Person whom I can’t remember – May have been the geology laboratory technician or a lecturer? We didn’t have him lecturing geology in 1964 or after.
Additional staff who joined after shifting to the Shortland campus were:
Dr. Konrad Moelle – 1965, from Germany via BHP Coal Division, Wollongong. Engineering and structural geology, petrofabrics and exploration geology after Dr. Rattigan left.
Dr. Bas Hensen – from Holland. Petrology. He joined about 1966 and our year didn’t have him.
Ian Blayden – PhD. Student and lab. Technician.
All of the lecturers also taught general geology subjects.
