MothInBoots: It is 1931 MothInBoots: Ninnis and Mertz Memorial Cross and Plaque on Azimuth Hill at Cape Denison. The original Plaque is now in the Australian Antarctic Division Library at Kingston, Tasmania. This is about the Far Eastern sledging party of three in 1912/13 with Huskies. Ninnis and Mertz died, Mawson survived. This story is the main story of Mawson's Home of the Blizzard (online at Project Gutenberg) and it is also told in David Robert's Alone On The Ice (available at Amazon in various formats). The Memorial Cross was made by Frank Bickerton of the AAE 1911-1914. MothInBoots: In 1908 Mawson together with Edgeworth David and Alister Mackay climbed to the summit of Mount Erebus on Ross Island. They also trekked to the South Magnetic Pole, which was still accessible overland. It was a journey of 1260 miles. They made magnetic observations and carried out excellent cartographic work. On arriving back at the base where the Nimrod was waiting Mawson fell into a crevasse and was luckily saved by assistance from persons from the ship. MothInBoots: The Proclamation of 5th January, 1931 was at Anemometer Hill, Cape Denison. Sir Douglas Mawson read and signed the Proclamation. It was written in script by Alexander Kennedy. Frank Hurley had a hand in writing the words. Frank Hurley and Eric Douglas soldered cans together as canisters to hold the proclamations. This original proclamation is in the National Museum of Australia in Canberra, ACT. A replica is at Cape Denison.
