AddBy: Gerry Foley28th Jan 2022 10:03AMIn the early 1960s I worked at the skelp mill during my university holidays doing very low-level tasks like sweeping the floor and assisting in removing the old brick lining of the furnace—where it was hot as Hades and you had to (counter-intuitively) wear thick clothing for protection from the radiant heat. There was a rule that you never turned your back on the long red-hot step of metal speeding over rollers, because if there was a blockage the metal would spray all over the place and cause serious injury. Euchre was game of choice for relaxation during lunch.
