SummaryInterview by Nic Curk in 1987 with Neville 'Ned' Andrews about his life and work with the State Dockyard Union.
Born Neville ‘Ned’ Thomas Marchese at Wangat, near Chichester Dam. Left Chichester in 1922 and moved to Cooks Hill after his father passed away.
Educated at Cooks Hill Primary School, left school aged 14 years. Influenced by Head Master George Blair (former Wallaby player), Paddy Maher (former Rugby ‘Kangaroo’ player) and Bill Stanton.
In 1942 joined AIF – Papua New Guinea during WWII. Represented South Newcastle in Rugby in 1946. Moved to Queensland, Ned played rugby league for NSW and Queensland, as well as one test for Australia against Great Britain in 1950.
Finished football career in Newcastle at age of 42.
