SummaryInterview by Margaret Piefke in 1987 with Matron Narelle Punton (Mrs MN Butler M.B.E) about the nursing profession and Wallsend District Hospital. Born in Wallsend she went to school in Wallsend and Plattsburg Primary Schools, completing her leaving certificate at Newcastle Girls' High and receiving a scholarship to study any subject, she decided to study nursing. Matron Punton started her nursing career in 1938 at The Wallsend District Hospital, working under Matron Graham, she gradually advanced through the nursing ranks to become Matron at Wallsend in 1968. The interview reflects on the changes in medical technology and treatments, Matron Punton discussed the power of observation – "sight and smell", nurses were trained to work with patients, "could smell infection" before there were the various tests and scans were available. Although observation is still important, today nurses have to know how to use machines and new technology to assess. In 1977 Matron Punton was awarded MBE for nurse education and community work.
