SummaryInterview by Kay Davies in 1987 with Pearl Hickey who was born early in the twentieth century and recalls her life during WWI as a nurse and later involvement in various women's movements in Newcastle. As a wife of a railway worker she had empathy for families of railway workers living in remote areas of NSW, particularly during the Depression. Pearl joined the Railway Women’s Auxiliary, the Labor Movement and the Housewives Movement. She describes meeting Madame-Chiang Kai-Shek on her visit to Australia, the Newcastle branch of the Housewives Assoc. managed to get her to come to Newcastle, they met her for lunch at the Great Northern Hotel, and afterwards attended a reception at City Hall, where Chiang Kai-Shek spoke about China and woman of the world. Pearl also talks about attending 'university classes' run by Mr C.E Martin and psychology lectures at WEA, Cooks Hill .
