SummaryInterview by Michele Ashford in 1989 with Clem Ashford about his early life in Scone and later working in a bank.
Clem decided to branch out on a new venture and started printing and designing his own lampshades and ashtrays, he also purchased a 'theatre shop' in Stockton, renovating it and renaming 'Shipmates'. He later transferred 'Shipmates' to Newcastle Beach.
Clem also opened 'Sugar and Spice' and 'Crystal Bar' sandwich shop in Hunter Street, and 'Shipmate Dairy Whip' at Garden City.
Clem spent some time in the South Pacific, however returned to Newcastle in 1975 and started printing his own designs onto fabric.
Towards the end of the interview Clem reflects of the changing 'eating out' habits of people in Newcastle.
