Description

The Margaret Henry Oral History Archive is a collection of audio tapes, transcripts, summaries and essays that were part of the Oral Histories Open Foundation Course (1986-1989). Margaret Henry was a history lecturer at the UON in the 1980s.

The oral history tapes have been digitised and made freely available to the wider global research community thanks to the generosity of The Vera Deacon Regional History Fund.

SummaryInterview by Jeanette Dixon in 1988 with Moia De Martin about the Great Depression. Moia (nee Bowman) was born in Estell Street, Maryville in 1918, her father died quite young and he brothers gained apprenticeships at the Dock Yards and were the main breadwinners for the family. In 1934 at the age of 14 Moia left school and at 16 gained employment at R Hall & Sons packing small goods, she describes the working conditions and difficulties in gaining later employment. She worked for a short time at Mayfield Post Office delivering mail, however at the end of WWII was put off and replaced by a male worker. Last edited by: sarah
