SummaryInterview by Andrea Keirs in 1987 with James Arthur Latham about his family history, Newcastle history and the harbour.
James was born 1911 in Mayfield. His family was involved in boating in the Hunter Region, they participated in fishing, as well as racing and sailing regattas. Other members of the family were boat builders, including his great grandfather who built boats at Clarencetown in 1855, and later moved to Stockton to build 40 to 50 tonne ketches.
His grandfather, Thomas Latham, born 1852 went to sea at 15 and much later in 1884 was Master of a Harbour and River vessel names the 'Pinafore'.
James' father was also named James, he and his brothers were good rowers and one of his sisters an Australian champion in single sculls. During the interview James reflects on his life and the changing face of Newcastle.
