Description

The Margaret Henry Oral History Archive is a collection of audio tapes, transcripts, summaries and essays that were part of the Oral Histories Open Foundation Course (1986-1989). Margaret Henry was a history lecturer at the UON in the 1980s.

The oral history tapes have been digitised and made freely available to the wider global research community thanks to the generosity of The Vera Deacon Regional History Fund.

SummaryInterview by Jo Fenwick in 1988 with 80 year old Gordon Edwards about early apprenticeships in hairdressing, Newcastle. Gordon together with his wife, ran a Hairdressing Salon in Pacific Street, Newcastle. He began an apprenticeship in Male Hairdressing in the early 1920s and throughout his working life he contributed to many overseas magazines and entered as many hairdressing competitions as he could. This kept him up to date with styles and techniques and allowed him the opportunity to see "Top Hairdressers" at work. Gordon describes the various perming techniques, the Eugene Electric Wave - an endurance test for both customer and operator. He was also a part-time Cameraman for both N.B.N. 3 and Chanel 7 (Sydney) and in his retirement entertained at Senior Citizens Clubs. Last edited by: sarah
