Student, 20, on Statue Charge

A 20-year-old university student was charged at Newcastle Police Station yesterday with having caused malicious injury to the Soldier’s Monument on Thursday.

The youth a student of Economics on a scholarship from the Newcastle heavy industry, was charged after he had been interviewed by the Acting Officer-in-Charge of Newcastle C.I.B. (Detective sergeant L. T. V. Holmes.

Detectives were called in to investigate a yellow stripe painted on the back of the statue on top of the early on Thursday morning.

The Youth will appear in Newcastle Court on Monday.
