Autonomy day permit for July 1

A request by the Newcastle University Autonomy Day director to hold an appeal and procession and distribute a university paper was granted by the Newcastle City Council last night – but on a different day to that requested.

The Lord Mayor (Ald. Purdue) said last night that the time applied for – July 2 – would coincide with a button day appeal.

He successfully moved that July 1 he allocated.

The Autonomy Day director said that in previous years approval had been given by the police Department and City Council for a student procession along Hunter-street while funds were collected.

This year permission was sought for the appeal to start at 7 am, the procession route to be from the corner of Hunter-street to Steel-street, and for students to distribute copies of the university paper to members of the public.

The use of the outfield of No. 2 Sports Ground was also sought.

The council agreed to this subject to conditions regarding the use of the ground and that the appeal should not extend into July 2, a Friday.
