Conservation in the Newcastle is synonymous with the NP&PM, which was one of the oldest environmental organisations in the region.
Established in 1952 as an offshoot of the now disbanded Parks and Playgrounds Movement of New South Wales in the same year the Northumberland County Plan was first exhibited.
In 2016 the organisation is known as the Parks & Playground Movement (P&PM).
